Kendall Coyne Schofield is golden again, and Abbey Murphy has joined her in an elite club.

Coyne Schofield, a Palos Heights resident and Sandburg graduate, won her second Olympic women’s hockey gold and fourth medal overall as Team USA rallied to edge Canada 2-1 on Feb. 19 at the Milan Cortina Olympics.

Murphy, an Evergreen Park resident and Mother McAuley grad, earned her first gold and second medal.

After a dominant and drama-free start in this Olympics, the United States needed some late heroics to edge Canada in their second matchup of the tournament.

Megan Keller scored the game-winner 4:07 into overtime after captain Hillary Knight tied it with 2:04 left in regulation.

Team USA had fallen behind 1-0 54 seconds into the second period when Canada’s Kristin O’Neill scored a short-handed goal.

The U.S. started these Olympics 6-0, outscoring its opponents 31-1. That included a 5-0 win over Canada in pool play on Feb. 10.

Team USA previously won gold in 1998 and 2018, took the silver in 2002, 2010, 2014 and 2018. Canada was seeking its sixth gold in the eight Olympic women’s hockey tournaments.

Murphy had four shots in the gold-medal game, while Coyne Schofield had three.

For the tournament, Coyne Schofield scored three goals — one in the quarterfinals and two in the semifinals — while Murphy finished with one goal and three assists.
