A 37-year-old man was shot and killed early Sunday morning by a Palos Hills police officer in the Riviera townhomes near 111th Street and 86th Avenue in Palos Hills.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Gerhardt G. Facko, 37.
The Medical Examiner’s Office said Facko died of multiple gunshot wounds and ruled his death a homicide.
Illinois State Police said they were asked by Palos Hills police to investigate because the incident involved “a fatal officer involved shooting.”
Palos Hills police said they received a 911 domestic disturbance call at 4:18 a.m. Sunday. The caller said a male subject had a shotgun and was going to harm his girlfriend and her children.
Police arrived on scene and were met by Facko and an officer involved shooting occurred. He was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
State police said Facko, of 7 Cour Versaille, was armed when he was shot.
State police said investigators canvassed the area for video and interviewed paramedics, police officers and witnesses. State police said it was an “active investigation.”
Police said no other injuries were reported.
Police did not identify the officer involved.
Witnesses who live in the townhomes said the domestic dispute between Facko and his girlfriend started about 4 a.m. Sunday.
They said Facko was armed with a gun and was outside of his home when police arrived.
The townhomes are across the street from Moraine Valley Community College and down 111th Street from Stagg High School. Both were closed at the time of the shooting.
