Sandra Ramirez, LPN, who cares for assisted living and memory care residents at Mercy Circle, received a surprise honor in early February when she was named the latest recipient of The DAISY Award.

Jonathan Frazier, vice president of regional operations for Trinity Health Senior Communities (THSC), and Stacy Johnson, DNP, RN, HFA, NEA-BC, chief operating officer for THSC, visited Mercy Circle to personally present Ramirez with the award.

Ramirez was selected from nominations submitted between October and December 2025 by residents, their families and peers across THSC’s 25 mission-based, not-for-profit senior living communities in eight states. The award recognizes nurses who go above and beyond in caring for residents and hospital patients.

“The care and compassion Sandra shows every day truly exemplify what this award represents,” Johnson said.

The DAISY Award was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at 33 from an autoimmune disease. The acronym DAISY stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. THSC presents the award quarterly to honor extraordinary nurses.

Mercy Circle, sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, is the only faith-based senior living community on Chicago’s Southwest Side and operates as a not-for-profit, no entrance fee continuing care retirement community. It offers independent and assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and short-term rehab. Since 2021, U.S. News & World Report has ranked its short-term rehab program among the highest performing in the country.

Residents at Mercy Circle enjoy thoughtful amenities, life enrichment programs, Mass and other religious services, and numerous social opportunities.
