You don’t need a pickleball partner to get started with the sport sweeping Orland Park. Now on Sundays, you can show up alone and join the action.
Drop-in play at the Franklin Loebe Center has become so popular that courts are consistently packed with players eager to volley, strategize, and socialize — whether they arrived with a partner or walked in solo.
What started as a curiosity for many Orland Park residents has quickly turned into a favorite pastime — and the village is making it easier than ever to join in. Newcomers can try the sport without committing to a league or finding a partner first.
“I have a strong pingpong and tennis background. Pickleball marries the two sports,” said Orland Park resident Tom Hallet, adding that the game quickly hooks players and keeps them coming back.
Played with a lightweight paddle and a perforated plastic ball, pickleball unfolds on a compact court that encourages quick rallies and strategic shot placement.
The rules are simple enough for newcomers to pick up in a single session, and the equipment is affordable, yet the pace and precision of the game offer plenty of challenge for seasoned competitors.
The sport’s rapid growth is largely tied to its accessibility and social nature. The smaller court size encourages conversation, especially in doubles matches, and the low-impact movement appeals to older adults and anyone looking for a fun way to stay active.
John Atkenson, of Orland Park said he began playing with his wife during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many were searching for safe, outdoor activities.
“It’s a lot of fun and a good way to socialize and make friends,” Atkenson said.
Kim Ryan said that sense of connection is what keeps her coming back. For her, the best part of pickleball is the socialization that naturally happens between games and even during rallies.

Orland Park offers drop-in pickleball at two locations. At the Sportsplex, 11351 W. 159th St., sessions run Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
And at Franklin Loebe Center, drop-ins are Sundays 3–5 p.m. (except Feb. 22 and April 5), Mondays 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., and Tuesday–Friday 1–3 p.m.
Rates are $4 for residents, $15 for non-residents, and $6 (Sportsplex) or $55 (Franklin Loebe) for non-resident seniors 55 and older.
Franklin Loebe staffer Stephanie Quilty said the Sunday sessions draw consistently strong crowds.
“It doesn’t cost a lot and it’s easy and fun to do,” Quilty said, noting that the Sunday drop-ins are extremely popular.
With flexible scheduling and affordable rates, local officials say the drop-in format makes it easy for newcomers to try the sport while giving regular players a steady place to play.

You can use the PlayTime Scheduler app to find out who will be playing at the Loebe Center from 1pm to 3pm on weekdays.
