Evergreen Park native Abbey Murphy has four assists as Team USA’s women’s hockey team stays undefeated at the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics.

On Tuesday, the two-time world champion and Olympic silver medalist assisted on three goals in a 5-0 victory over Canada. Team USA improved to 4-0.

Murphy, 23, got her start playing hockey at age six at the Daniel V. Capuano Ice Rink in Evergreen Park.

She joined St. Jude Hockey Club in Crestwood, then Chicago Mission Youth Hockey Club, where she played on all-girls teams and logged up to 80 games a year.

The Chicago Mission program developed her alongside five other future Olympians: Kendall Coyne Schofield, Megan Bozek, Alex Cavallini, Jesse Compher, and Savannah Harmon.

Murphy is the daughter Ed and Lynne Murphy. Her father is a Marine veteran and former college football player. Her mother played softball. Her brothers played football and wrestle at the college level.

After graduating from Mother McAuley High School in 2020, Murphy enrolled at the University of Minnesota. She starred her freshman year, then joined the U.S. Women’s Hockey residency program, taking a gap year to train in Blaine, Minnesota.

On New Year’s Day 2022, her name was announced on the Olympic roster. At 19, she was the second-youngest player selected. She won silver in Beijing.

Murphy returned to Minnesota and kept training. She won gold at the IIHF World Championships in 2023 and 2025.

Against Finland on Saturday, Feb. 7, Murphy scored the final goal in a 5-0 U.S. win and recorded an assist. Against Switzerland on Feb. 9, she had one shot in a 5-0 shutout.

On her official Team USA biography Murphy says her sports role model is Kendall Coyne Schofield — the Palos Heights native also competing in Milan.

Now they’re teammates going for a gold medal.
