Suzanne Amra, principal of Sward School in Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123, has been named the 2026 Elementary Principal of the Year for the South Cook Region by the Illinois Principals Association, an honor recognizing exceptional leadership in education.

The award celebrates principals who foster student success, cultivate positive school culture, and demonstrate outstanding leadership. Only 20 leaders across Illinois received the regional honor this year. They will advance to compete at the state level, with the winner to be recognized at the IPA Education Leaders Annual Conference in October.

Superintendent Paul Enderle praised Amra’s leadership and commitment. ā€œSuzanne leads with intention, compassion, and a clear focus on what helps children thrive academically, socially, and emotionally,ā€ he said. ā€œHer ability to listen, collaborate, and make thoughtful decisions has made a lasting impact at Sward School.ā€

Amra credited the award to the school community. ā€œReceiving the IPA Elementary School Principal of the Year award is a great privilege, and I am truly humbled,ā€ she said. ā€œThis recognition reflects the remarkable people who make Sward such a special place. They inspire me every day and remind me why I enjoy what I do so much.ā€

During her tenure, Amra has built a welcoming and inclusive culture where students feel supported, staff feel valued, and families are engaged as partners in learning. Her leadership emphasizes strong relationships, high expectations, and meaningful support for every student.

The Illinois Principals Association award honors principals whose work goes beyond administration to positively shape school communities. Amra’s recognition reflects both her professional excellence and her dedication to the students and families she serves.
