Cecilia “Chila” Veracruz Abalos, a beacon of unwavering faith and joy, completed her earthly journey on January 17, 2026, at the age of 99, in La Grange, Illinois, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on November 22, 1926, in San Marcos, Texas, Chila’s life was a testament to the grace, strength, and devotion that flow from a life deeply rooted in Catholic faith.
Chila’s early years in Texas shaped her resilience and strong sense of community. Her education extended far beyond the classroom, as she embraced life’s lessons with curiosity, humility, and an open heart. She later built a dedicated career at Advance Electronics in Chicago, Illinois, where her diligence and spirit of service reflected her commitment to excellence in all she did.
Faith was the cornerstone of Chila’s life. She walked steadily in the light of the Lord, guided by love, hope, and trust in God’s promises. Her faith sustained her through both trials and triumphs, and she lived each day as a reflection of God’s grace. As expressed in the words attributed to Rabindranath Tagore, “Faith is the bird that feels the light when the dawn is still dark,” Chila’s faith allowed her to see beauty and purpose even in life’s most difficult moments.
Chila had a passion for travel and adventure, journeying across the country with her loving husband and cherished dog, Pepe. These travels were about far more than destinations; they were opportunities to connect with others, gather stories, and celebrate the joy of living. Her infectious enthusiasm and zest for life inspired all who knew her to appreciate life’s simple pleasures.
Chila was preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Vicente Abalos, who now rests in the arms of the Lord. She was also preceded in death by many siblings. She is survived by her brother, John Quilanton Veracruz of San Antonio, Texas, along with many extended family members who were woven into the beautiful tapestry of her life.
Chila’s legacy is found not only in the years she lived, but in the lives she touched and the faith she shared. Her presence was a reminder that every day is a gift and an opportunity to reflect God’s love. Firm in her Catholic faith, she believed in the promise of eternal life and now rests peacefully in the loving arms of her Savior.
As we celebrate Chila’s life, we are reminded of the words of the Apostle Paul: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Chila’s life was indeed a good fight fought with grace, a race completed with perseverance, and a faith kept with unwavering devotion. Her spirit will continue to shine as a guiding light for all who were blessed to know her.
