A Reavis High School teacher resigned last month after students reported allegations of inappropriate behavior, according to a district statement posted to Reavis High School District 220’s official Facebook page on Jan. 9.
According to district administrators, two students came forward Friday, Dec. 12, with concerns involving a teacher in the World Languages Department. One student reported the concerns to a school counselor, while the other spoke with an English teacher. Both reports were forwarded to administrators.
School officials interviewed several students that Friday and continued interviews through the following Monday. Administrators determined the allegations warranted further action.
On Tuesday, Dec. 16, administrators interviewed the teacher with a union representative present. The district said the teacher was immediately suspended and informed he faced termination. While working through the process with union representatives, the teacher submitted his resignation.
After consulting with the district’s attorney, officials accepted the resignation on Dec. 19. The district said there would be no severance or post-employment compensation and that the teacher’s employment had ended. His keys were collected, and he was instructed not to return to school property or attend school-sponsored events.
The district said it notified the Burbank Police Department, the Illinois Regional Office of Education, and the Illinois State Board of Education. All three agencies have opened investigations, which the district said it will fully support.
The statement does not identify the teacher or specify the nature of the alleged inappropriate behavior. It also does not indicate how long the teacher was employed by the district.
Superintendent Daniel J. Riordan said the district takes allegations of misconduct seriously and that student safety and well-being remain its top priority.
“This is an active and ongoing situation,” the statement said.
This is a developing story.
