Sandburg graduate Kendall Coyne Schofield is leading the Professional Women’s Hockey League with eight goals.
Mother McAuley grad Abbey Murphy recently tied a Minnesota program record for points in a game with three goals and four assists.
Both are having a pretty good 2026 so far.
Oh, and the two area hockey greats were also named to the U.S. Olympic women’s team again. For Coyne-Schofield, 33, it is her fourth go-round with the team and for Murphy, 23, it will be her second.
Making an Olympic team never gets old for Coyne Schofield. The team is in training for the games in Milan, which begin Feb. 5 with a preliminary-round game against Czechia.
“Just bringing the world together through sport. It’s so incredible to see,” she told KARE-TV in Minnesota. “But I think everyone’s really, really anticipating the Milan Games because the Beijing Games were unique. They were very challenging, going through those in a global pandemic, and it wasn’t the true experience of an Olympic Games and having two prior experiences before Beijing.”
Coyne has won two Olympic silver medals and one gold.
When Murphy was in high school, she said Coyne Schofield was a hero of hers. And now she will join the Palos Heights native as teammates for the Olympics for the second time.
Murphy, an Evergreen Park native, played in seven Olympic games in 2022 and had an assist. Overall, in international competition she played in 49 games with 23 goals and 15 assists for the U18, Women’s World Championship and Olympic teams.
