Even in the new year, holiday lights were the most talked-about item Thursday night.
The Jan. 8 Hickory Hills City Council meeting opened with recognition of the city’s annual Lights of Hickory Hills decorating contest, something Mayor Mike Howley said the city looks forward to each year.
“At least it’s not too cold tonight,” Howley said, thanking residents for “making the city look so great during the holiday season.”
Awards were announced by ward.
The Rollberg family of 79th Avenue took first place in the First Ward, followed by Jennifer Salcedo of 93rd Street. In the Second Ward, first place went to the Schendl family of 83rd Court. Josh and Nicole Czarny, also of 83rd Court, received second place and were present to accept their award.

Michael Selvek earned first place in the Third Ward, with John Leidecker of Woodland Drive taking second. Fourth Ward honors went to Paolo and Alyssa Puzzo of Oakhill Court, followed by Timothy and Adaliz Stewart of 82nd Avenue.
In other city business, Howley addressed the recent run of water main breaks crews have been dealing with.
“I see the guys out there during the cold weather and the warm weather, on and off,” he said. “They’re doing a great job.”
He also thanked Sue Lehr and the Public Works Department for handling seasonal decorations across the city, including Veterans Park and displays along 87th Street.
A local family milestone was also recognized, with a third grandchild of former Alderman John Szeszycki recently earning the rank of Eagle Scout.
“Only about 2 percent of Boy Scouts become Eagle Scouts,” Howley said. “That’s quite an accomplishment.”
The council approved paying more than $4.45 million in bills for the first half of January, along with $174,700.53 in customary payments from the end of December. Officials also noted a donation of 30 storm-ready emergency kits that will be distributed to seniors.
The next Hickory Hills City Council meeting will be Jan. 22.
