GameStop announced last week it was closing hundreds of stores including 10 locations in Illinois in Orland Park, Tinley Park, New Lenox, and Hodgkins.

The closings marking the latest suburban casualties in another round of store shutdowns by the struggling video game and electronics retailer.

The closings were sudden, but not completely unexpected. Video gaming has gone from CDs, DVDs and cartridges to the world of digital downloads where trips to stores are less necessary for new game releases.

The Hodgkins store at the Quarry Mall and the Tinley Park store at 16205 S. Harlem Ave., closed Jan. 7. The Orland Park location at 15864 LaGrange Road and the New Lenox store at 2344 East Lincoln Highway were scheduled to remain open through Wednesday, Jan. 14.

Customers arriving at both stores have been greeted by signs posted on the doors announcing the closures. Emails were also sent to subscribers notifying them of the impending shutdowns and encouraging final visits to address in-store preorders and pending submissions.

The closures were not publicly announced far in advance, and the short timeline left little opportunity for customers or workers to prepare. Information shared at the stores indicated that the Tinley Park location was notified just days before its scheduled closing, with limited details provided about the decision.

Many shoppers viewed the Orland Park store as a longtime fixture in the community, with familiar staff members contributing to customer loyalty even as the video game retail industry continued shifting toward digital sales.

Both the Orland Park and Tinley Park stores were targeted in smash-and-grab burglaries in September 2025, when vehicles were driven into the storefronts to gain access to merchandise. The incidents caused damage but did not immediately result in closures.

GameStop, which sells new and used video games, consoles, accessories and collectibles, has been aggressively shrinking its retail footprint worldwide. The company closed roughly 1,000 stores globally in 2024 and announced in March 2025 that additional closures were expected.

Both south suburban locations also served as authorized dealers for Professional Sports Authenticator, a third-party grading service that authenticates and encapsulates trading cards and video games.

In Orland Park, customer preorders and PSA submissions will be transferred to the GameStop location at Chicago Ridge Mall, which will remain open.

Customers with questions related to the Tinley Park store were directed to contact the location at 708-342-0481.
