After collaborating with the Cook County Assessor’s office last month to identify exemptions missed by 23rd Ward residents to reduce their property tax bill, Ald. Silvana Tabares is co-hosting another two days of tax appeal assistance events, partnering with Cook County Board of Review Commissioner George Cardenas (1st).

Because ward residents are having trouble managing property tax payments, Tabares scheduled the two additional January events.

“The Cook County Board of Review has announced they have reopened property tax appeals for Lake Township. To further support the residents in my ward, I have reached out to Commissioner George Cardenas and invited representatives from his office to my ward offices to assist residents who want to re-appeal their property taxes,” Tabares said.

Cook County Board of Review representatives will be available for in-person support Tuesday, Jan. 6, at the alderman’s West Lawn office at 3954 W. 63rd St. and on Wednesday Jan. 7 at the Garfield Ridge ward office at 6247 S. Archer Ave. Appointments will be available both days from 9 a.m. to noon.

In-person appointments have limited availability. To make an appointment, call Tabares’ office at 773-582-4444 or email ward23@cityofchicago.org.

Persons must be a 23rd Ward resident seeking appeals assistance for Lake Township only.

Residents can find their township name and property PIN number listed in the right corner of their property tax bill.

At the West Lawn office, free parking is available behind the building. There is a free parking lot at the Garfield Ridge office.

During an August press conference about property tax appeals, Cardenas expressed frustration over property tax appeals remaining stubbornly low amongst minority communities.

“It’s important for people to understand what’s at stake,” Cardenas said. “Their financial lifeline in many ways is their home so they need to defend that like the most precious things they have.”

Cardenas emphasized the importance of 23rd Ward residents going directly to the Cook County Board of Review, local representatives such as aldermen, Illinois state representatives or even state senators with property tax questions or issues.

Look for updates regarding these events on Cardenas’ Facebook page or the Cook County Board of Review website.

“This initiative aims to provide the necessary support for residents navigating the appeal process,” Tabares said.
