Palos Hills police are investigating a deceptive practices case reported Dec. 18 in which a check was stolen from a mailbox in the 10500 block of 82nd Court.
The victim reported putting a check for $700 in the mailbox for the mail carrier to pick up, but someone evidently stole it.
They were alerted to the theft when the check, which had been altered to read $8,900, was cashed with a different name.
