Two Oak Lawn congregations known for their progressive Christian voices are joining forces to create a new faith community. Pilgrim Faith United Church of Christ, at 9411 S. 51st Ave., and Salem United Church of Christ, at 9717 S. Kostner Ave., will merge after the start of the new year to form New Hope United Church of Christ at Salem’s Kostner Avenue location.
Pastor Daniel Sather of Pilgrim Faith United Church said the merger brings together two smaller congregations within the same denomination that share a commitment to inclusivity, social engagement, and faith-driven community outreach. “We feel we can do better together,” Sather said.
Beginning Sunday, Jan. 18, all services will be held at the former Salem building, which has been renamed New Hope United Church of Christ. The Pilgrim Faith building will be sold.
Sather said the new church will continue a commitment to service rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ. “Our vision is to build a faith community where everyone belongs and where the love of God is expressed through action,” he said. “We want to embrace all people regardless of race, background, gender identity, or life circumstance and work together to meet both spiritual and practical needs in our neighborhood.”
New Hope United Church of Christ plans to focus on worship, discipleship, and community engagement, emphasizing justice, humility, and relationship-building. Its guiding statements, “Rooted in Love. Growing in Faith. Welcoming All,” reflect the congregation’s dedication to being the hands and feet of Christ in the world.
The merged church is expected to host community programs and outreach initiatives designed to strengthen connections among residents and provide support where it is needed most.
