For caregivers of loved ones with dementia, patience was emphasized as one of the most meaningful gifts they could offer, particularly when a shared sense of reality began to fade.
That message guided the Smith Village Caregiver Support Group meeting held Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Smith Village, 2320 W. 113th Place. The monthly gathering brought together caregivers navigating the daily challenges of supporting people whose perceptions of the world often differ from their own.
Participants discussed moments when logic or correction can heighten confusion or distress, according to Alice Keane, a Smith Village resident who co-led the support group.
“People with dementia often experience a view of the world that doesn’t match with our own,” Keane said. “But caregivers must remember that this reality is still very real to that person. How you respond can determine whether an interaction succeeds or fails.”
Keane and Smith Village Life Enrichment Director Bridget Murphy led the discussion, focusing on what caregivers often describe as defining reality. The approach centers on recognizing and respecting a loved one’s perception rather than trying to correct inaccuracies. Attendees were encouraged to share their own experiences and strategies.
Both Keane and Murphy have completed specialized training through the Alzheimer’s Association, and the group provided a confidential space for caregivers at various stages of the caregiving journey.
The conversation also addressed challenges that tend to intensify during the holiday season, when routines change and social gatherings often include alcohol.
“Something as simple as an evening cocktail can become an issue,” Keane said. Because dementia affects short-term memory, a person may forget having had a drink and reach for another, potentially leading to confusion or conflict.
Keane shared practical suggestions discussed during the meeting, including quietly substituting nonalcoholic beverages or choosing restaurants and gatherings that do not serve alcohol to avoid confrontation.
The caregiver support group meeting was open to the community and offered caregivers an opportunity to connect, share experiences and gain practical guidance. More information about Smith Village is available at SmithVillage.com.
