Here’s something most people don’t know about their neighbors: Every December, Worth Township transforms into a massive gift-wrapping operation that would make Santa’s workshop jealous.

The township’s Christmas Care Program is quietly helping record numbers of families this year — 65 applications came in on the first day alone, putting them on track to serve way more than their usual 125-200 families. It’s all powered by neighbors helping neighbors.

Residents across the township’s 12 communities donate toys, businesses chip in, and local groups like the American Legion Riders make dramatic motorcycle deliveries that Township Manager Katie Elwood calls “something to see.” The whole operation runs on pure community spirit.

The real magic happens in the township building where staff create an assembly line that ensures every child gets four to five gifts tailored to their interests. Everything goes out in plain black bags so parents can wrap them however they want — maintaining the Christmas morning surprise.

What makes this a true local secret? Most people don’t realize how much their neighbors are quietly stepping up during the holidays. While families are applying for help, other residents are dropping off donations without fanfare.

It’s Worth Township’s best-kept holiday tradition: a community taking care of its own, one toy donation at a time. The program serves Worth, Oak Lawn, Blue Island, Bridgeview, Chicago Ridge, Crestwood, Evergreen Park, Hometown, Merrionette Park, Palos Heights, Alsip, and Robbins.
