Tucked into a quiet corner of 78th Avenue, Toast & Butter Cafe has become a neighborhood favorite for diners seeking comfort food with a creative twist.

The cozy spot at 10298 S. 78th Avenue blends gourmet toast creations, homemade pastries and freshly brewed coffee with the kind of friendly atmosphere that keeps customers lingering long after plates are cleared. The cafe, open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., draws steady morning and lunchtime crowds looking for a relaxed, welcoming place to start their day.

Alongside its signature coffee, the cafe pours ice cold lemonade all day in fun flavors that range from strawberry and pomegranate to mango habanero, blackberry, dragon fruit, blue cotton candy and classic. Blended coffee lovers can choose from rich caramel, chocolate marshmallow or an Oreo-style option.

Breakfast toasts have become standout favorites. Each one is built on sourdough panini toast with sesame seeds and topped with a poached egg, smashed avocado and a choice of potatoes or fresh fruit. Traditional breakfast staples like omelets and pancakes also remain steady customer favorites.

Lunch options round out the menu with hearty choices such as fresh salads, cheeseburgers and a Reuben panini, among many other offerings.

Owner and chef Jose Figueroa said the dish closest to his heart is the chilaquiles. The traditional Mexican breakfast combines fried corn tortilla pieces simmered in red or green salsa and finished with toppings such as eggs, cheese or crema.

“It is the one thing I could eat every day,” Figueroa said.

Figueroa, a self-taught chef who grew up in Addison, said he has spent his entire life working in restaurants. His culinary approach at Toast and Butter Cafe blends what he calls “new school” and “old school” techniques, a mix he believes keeps the menu both comforting and fresh.

“Food evolves, and I like to evolve with it,” he said.

That balance of creativity and familiarity is what he hopes keeps customers returning — whether for a steaming cup of coffee, a colorful lemonade or a bold new take on breakfast.
