Jose Espinoza, 27, of the 5400 block of South Hermitage Avenue, Chicago, was charged with endangering the life of a child and several moving traffic violations November 2 after he left the scene of an accident, police said.

Police said Espinoza left the scene of a three-car accident about 3:40 p.m. His vehicle, which took on heavy front-end damage, had his girlfriend and two small children inside, police said.

Police said they found Espinoza about a mile away from the accident where he was sitting outside his vehicle with blood on his cheek. Espinoza told police he had been drinking earlier in the day and admitted to “hitting something.”

Police said they detected a strong smell of alcohol on Espinoza’s breath. Police said his speech was slurred and his eyes were red and bloodshot.

When he was placed in the ambulance to go to the hospital, Espinoza became combative with paramedics.

In addition to being charged with endangering the life of a child, Espinoza was also charged with DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, battery and resisting a peace officer, police said.
