The sound of saws and hammers fills Andrew High School’s woodshop, but this semester, it is joined by conversation, laughter, and teamwork. A collaboration between woodworking students and the Ultima Program has turned the classroom into a place where students develop skills while building connections.

This year’s project, called “Breaking Bread,” has students making cutting boards and charcuterie boards, simple tools that symbolize bringing people together. “We’re emphasizing not only making and eating food, but the shared experiences that happen around it,” said Woods teacher Jeff Cassidy. “Cutting boards are like mini tables or serving trays that bring people together.”

Woodworking 2 and 3 students pair with Ultima students, who have specialized learning needs, to design and build boards from start to finish. The process of measuring, cutting, gluing, sanding, and finishing requires patience, precision, and cooperation. Students rotate partners each session, giving them a chance to work with different classmates and learn from one another.

The project continues beyond the woodshop. Students plan to bake together in culinary classes, creating another shared experience. A bake sale featuring the boards and baked goods will help fund next year’s collaboration.

“The focus isn’t just on the boards themselves,” Cassidy said. “It’s about giving students a chance to work together and learn from each other.”

By combining hands-on craftsmanship with collaboration, students are gaining more than woodworking skills. They are practicing communication, problem-solving, and teamwork, lessons that extend well beyond the classroom.
