Saint Xavier University has appointed Caress Dean, Ph.D., as its new provost, bringing to the role more than a decade of higher education experience, a strong record of research and grant success, and a leadership philosophy rooted in communication, transparency and empowerment.

Dean, who began her role in October, said stepping into the provost position carries deep personal meaning.

“Serving as the new provost means collaborating closely with faculty, staff, University leadership and community partners to create an environment where students can explore their passions and discover a sense of purpose that is meaningful to them,” she said. “It also involves ensuring they acquire the knowledge and skills needed to launch and advance their careers while making a positive impact on the communities they serve.”

Dean joined SXU from Oakland University and said the first month and five days have affirmed her decision.

“I most enjoy connecting with students, faculty and staff during campus events,” she said. “These moments truly highlight the University’s mission and its culture of support, rooted in the works of Mercy. They serve as daily reminders of why I chose to take on this role because they reflect the values of Saint Xavier.”

Dean earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Marquette University, originally intending to become a veterinarian. After discovering her passion for public health, she completed a Master of Public Health at the University of Missouri–Columbia and later pursued a Ph.D. in public health at Saint Louis University.

Across her academic career, she has taught more than 75 undergraduate and graduate courses, published 27 journal articles, delivered 38 peer-reviewed conference presentations and secured more than $1.6 million in grant funding. She has also contributed to committees focused on strategic planning, enrollment management, recruitment and experiential learning.

Her leadership framework, guided by openness, collaboration and shared ownership, reflects her belief in empowering both students and faculty.

“I believe that open dialogue fosters trust, transparency builds credibility and empowering others creates a culture of shared ownership and innovation,” she said.

Dean said she was drawn to Saint Xavier’s mission, diverse student population and commitment to Mercy values. She sees the university’s approach to student support and its emphasis on purpose-driven education as uniquely impactful.

“The mission encourages students to explore who they are and discover their purpose in life,” she said. “Saint Xavier provides a foundation that empowers students to lead with purpose.”

A key priority for Dean is advancing Innovate 2028, SXU’s strategic plan designed to strengthen sustainability, academic excellence and mission-driven growth. She also plans to support policy development that reinforces operational efficiency and long-term success.

“Ensuring that SXU remains agile, forward thinking and responsive to the evolving needs of higher education is essential,” she said. “Equally important is building a vibrant academic community where everyone can flourish.”

Originally from the Bahamas, Dean’s upbringing influenced her love of beaches, seafood and exploring new restaurants. She enjoys running on treadmills and local trails, attending festivals and art events, and spending time with her family.

As she settles into her role, Dean said the warmth and passion of the SXU community stand out most.

“The shared commitment to care, service and excellence creates a welcoming and mission-driven environment,” she said. “I believe this passion is a key reason why students continue to choose Saint Xavier University as their academic home.”
