A neighborhood favorite made its long-awaited return on Saturday, Nov. 1, as Mickey’s Gyros in Palos Hills celebrated its grand reopening under new ownership.
The restaurant, located at 10701 S. Roberts Road, officially opened its doors on Dec. 13, 2024, but Saturday’s event marked its official ribbon-cutting celebration. Palos Hills Mayor Jerry Bennett and city officials joined residents and loyal customers for the occasion, cheering on the new owners and the restaurant’s renewed energy.

Gavino De La Rosa of Bolingbrook and his girlfriend, Zoila, are now at the helm of Mickey’s, bringing a mix of community spirit and culinary experience to the beloved eatery. De La Rosa comes from a strong restaurant background, having worked at Mickey’s locations in Bolingbrook, Oak Park and Crest Hill before taking over the Palos Hills spot.
“I used to come to Mickey’s a lot as a kid with my dad,” De La Rosa said. “I always had it in the back of my mind that one day I wanted to open up a small business.”
That dream became a reality when he and Zoila took ownership and revitalized the restaurant, keeping much of its nostalgic charm while adding personal touches. One of their biggest goals, De La Rosa said, was to recreate the original Mickey’s burger to match the taste so many locals remembered.
De La Rosa said he’s found the Palos Hills community welcoming and supportive. “It is a calm and quiet area, and the people are very friendly,” he said.
Mayor Bennett, who attended the ribbon-cutting, shared the crowd’s enthusiasm. “I’m very excited — Mickey’s is back!” he said.
For those looking for recommendations, De La Rosa’s go-to order is the grilled chicken on a pita with lettuce, tomato and mayo, though he said the gyros are another customer favorite.
Mickey’s Gyros is proudly family-operated, something De La Rosa takes great pride in. His father, Valentin, serves as head chef; his brother, Isidro, helps in the kitchen; and his mother, Miroslava, is known for her delicious homemade tamales.
“We want this to be a family establishment, where families can come in, relax together and enjoy great food,” De La Rosa said.
With a refreshed look, family-centered atmosphere and the same flavors that made it a local landmark, Mickey’s Gyros has once again become a gathering place for the Palos Hills community.

So excited to come and check out the reopening of Mickey‘s. I’ve already heard some great stories and a great soups from what I hear. Can’t wait to come and try you out. Best of luck. Welcome to the neighborhood.
