Laughter, crafts, and the faint rustle of tiny costumes filled the halls as Mother McAuley hosted its 30th annual Not-So-Haunted House, a Halloween celebration that’s fun without the fright. This beloved McAuley tradition takes place each fall, drawing families and students together for a joyful community experience.
“This event is fantastic because it lets alumnae return to share a piece of the McAuley experience with their children,” said Susie Zajack, Director of Student Life.

The Not-So-Haunted House began decades ago as a project by the freshmen acting class. Over the years, it has grown into a school-wide celebration, organized by various Mother McAuley clubs and organizations.
Activities included crafts, games, trick-or-treating, and photo experiences, with a low-sensory portion in the afternoon to accommodate students with special needs. The event is geared toward young children ages 2-8, giving them a safe and fun introduction to Halloween.
Between 100 and 150 students from all grade levels participated, helping to guide visitors through the festivities. Mother McAuley, located at 3737 W. 99th St., Chicago, welcomed families from across the city.
“It connects the alumnae and their future Mighty Macs with the current student body,” said Lily Costello, a senior from Mount Greenwood.
Junior Kruz Smith, of Beverly, added, “I got to dress up as a princess to take pictures with kids, and it was rewarding seeing the little faces who were so excited to visit McAuley.”
Nancy Lynch, Event Coordinator, said the aim is simple: give young children a safe, joyful introduction to Halloween while fostering community connections. “We love seeing the excitement on the children’s faces and how everyone—students, parents, and alumni—comes together,” she said.
With three decades of history, the Not-So-Haunted House continues to be a highlight of Mother McAuley’s fall calendar, proving that a little fun, a lot of smiles, and a dash of McAuley spirit make the perfect Halloween combination.
