Marie Dolores “Lola” Cuevas, 79, of Chicago, died Sept. 21, 2025, surrounded by her family.
Born Oct. 5, 1945, in Chicago, Ms. Cuevas was the daughter of the late Martin and Felicitas Cuevas. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Aurora Cuevas, and brother, Martin Cuevas.
Raised in Chicago’s Circle Campus neighborhood before moving to Lincoln Park, Ms. Cuevas graduated from Harrison High School. She later moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming a writer. While there, she worked as a paralegal and volunteered at the La Brea Tar Pits. A devoted movie lover, she especially admired actor Steve McQueen.
After returning to Chicago, Cuevas continued her passion for culture and learning through volunteer work at the Art Institute of Chicago and membership at the Field Museum. She was known for her creativity and craftsmanship, sharing her handmade ornaments and crafts at local fairs.
Known affectionately as “everyone’s aunt,” Cuevas was deeply involved in the lives of her nieces and nephews, attending Native American Pow Wows, helping with school projects, and offering endless support and encouragement.
She is survived by her sisters, Virginia (the late Kurt) Knight and Graciela (the late Robert) Gora; sister-in-law, Cathy (the late Martin) Cuevas; nieces, Laura (Scott), Michelle (Derek), Diana, Rachel (Nick) and Sarah; nephews, Robert and Alex; and great-nieces and nephews, Maya, Lukie, Matthew, Nathan and Audrey. She will also be missed by many friends, including those on the West Coast.
Visitation was held Friday, Oct. 3, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Sheldon-Goglin-Kaminski Funeral Home, 5935 W. Belmont Ave., Chicago.
Funeral prayers and procession began Saturday, Oct. 4, at 9 a.m. from the funeral home to St. Ferdinand Church, 3101 N. Mason Ave., Chicago, for a 9:30 a.m. Mass. Interment followed at Maryhill Cemetery in Niles.
