Dogs wagged their tails, cats purred softly, and even a few birds chirped in delight as pets and their owners gathered under sunny skies Saturday, Oct. 4, for the annual Pet Blessing honoring the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.

The celebration, held at Our Lady of the Woods, 10731 W. 131st St., Orland Park, brought the community together to recognize God’s creation and show compassion for all living creatures. Families lined up with their pets to receive a special blessing from parish clergy.

“We see pets of all kinds, one time even a tarantula,” Our Lady of the Woods Father Elliott Deez said.

Inspired by St. Francis of Assisi’s love for animals and the natural world, the long-standing tradition has become a highlight of the season for parishioners and pet owners alike. Many said the event serves as a reminder of the joy, loyalty, and comfort their pets bring — and the responsibility to care for them with kindness.

The joyful gathering not only celebrated animals as part of God’s creation but also strengthened the bond between neighbors, faith, and furry friends.
