Surrounded by generations of family at Red Lobster in Orland Park, Brunett Nash celebrated a milestone few ever reach: her 105th birthday.
On Saturday, Sept. 20, Nash was honored with a gathering that filled the room with children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even great-great-grandchildren. Laughter, love and stories of resilience flowed as easily as the plates of seafood set before her.

“The secret to living to 105 is belief in the Lord,” Nash said with a steady smile. “This is the Lord’s doing. It is important to say your prayers.”
Born and raised in Chicago before moving to Hazel Crest, Nash attended Chicago’s DuSable High School before marrying her late husband, Walter. Together, they raised three daughters: Cynthia, of Hazel Crest; Crystal, of Orland Park; and Sharmyne, of Nashville. Walter passed away in 1990.
Over the years, Nash’s family has grown to include four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. One grandchild passed away, a loss still felt deeply.
For the past three years, Nash has made her home at Alden Estates of Orland Park, where her family continues to surround her with care. Though, as her daughters note, she’s quick to remind everyone she’s still independent.
“I love my mother and we love taking care of her,” one daughter said, prompting Nash to reply with a grin, “I can take care of myself,” a comment that sparked laughter throughout the room.
Her children describe her as both nurturing and strong-willed. Crystal said she admires her mother’s spirited side: “Her feistiness is one of my favorite qualities.”
Cynthia reflected on the lessons her mother has passed down.
“My mother taught us how to care for others — for our husbands, for our children. She taught us to give back.”
As she celebrated her 105th year, Nash’s family agreed on one thing: her life has been a testament to faith, love and perseverance — with just the right dash of sass to keep everyone smiling.
