The Green Hills Public Library District is giving patrons a new way to access books, movies and more — any time of day or night.

The library is launching its new 24-Hour Library, a self-service kiosk that allows cardholders to check out and return materials, browse a rotating selection of trending titles and even pick up holds — all outside the library’s regular hours.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for Saturday, Sept. 13, at 10 a.m. at the library, 10331 S. Interlochen Drive in Palos Hills.

Located just outside the main entrance, the kiosk functions much like a vending machine for books and DVDs. It holds 235 curated items, similar to the library’s Hot Books Collection, including popular titles, movies, fan favorites and seasonal picks.

Materials will be updated regularly to keep the collection fresh.

Library Director Jane Jenkins said the idea came after she saw the 24-Hour Library in action at an American Library Association conference a few years ago.

“I saw the 24-Hour Library being demonstrated and decided this was something I really wanted to have for our community,” Jenkins said. “We all lead busy lives between work and family, and it’s not always easy to get to the library during our operating hours. By offering the 24-Hour Library, we’re giving our patrons the ability to access our collection beyond our regular hours — including holidays, staff training days and unexpected closures.”

Patrons can use their library card number and PIN to check out materials, return items and pick up holds — all at their convenience.

Jenkins said the library also took into account frequent requests for early morning and late-night access to materials.

“Patrons will really benefit from the flexibility to utilize our collection when it’s most convenient for them,” Jenkins said. “The 24-Hour Library allows patrons to check out and return materials and pick up holds — day or night.”

The project is part of the library’s Strategic Plan, which focuses on expanding access and engaging the community.

“One of our top goals is to provide responsive library services and remove barriers to access,” Jenkins said. “This initiative supports equitable access to library resources for all community members and better meets the diverse needs of our patrons.”

The ribbon-cutting event will include a demonstration of how the kiosk works, and light refreshments will be provided.
