Sometimes “sorry” just doesn’t cut it.
Just ask Ahmad Shaltaf, the 41-year-old Tinley Park man who was charged July 30 with retail theft for taking several bottles of liquor and placing them in a bag before walking out of Jewel Food Store, 9350 W. 159th St., Orland Park police said.
When approached by store security, Shaltaf placed the bottles on the ground and fled on foot across 159th Street, police said.
Police searched for Shaltaf but could not find him.
Later that evening, store security reviewed a video that showed a dark gray Tesla in the parking lot with its lights on and the engine running. A check of the registration showed it belonged to Shaltaf and gave his address in the 18100 block of Bramlett Drive in Tinley Park.
Police went to the address but were unable to make contact with Shaltaf.
The next morning around 11 a.m. police received a voicemail from Shaltaf saying he would like to retrieve his vehicle and that he was “sorry” about the incident that occurred the previous day.
Later that afternoon, Shaltaf came to the police station where he was issued a citation for retail theft and informed of his lifetime ban from Jewel.
