Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle issued a disaster proclamation Wednessday for Cook County in response to storms that hit the region on August 16 through August 19.
Cook County experienced significant rainfall over several days, leading to severe flooding in residential areas. Southwest Side homes in the 13th Ward, 23rd Ward, 14th Ward and 15th Ward, Berwyn, Cicero and Mount Prospect were among the hardest-hit Cook County municipalities.
By signing this proclamation, the county can pursue available resources to assist communities and residents in their recovery efforts.
“Cook County residents sustained significant damage due to severe storms that struck our community in August,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. “This is the second significant severe storm and flooding event in less than a month. I’m grateful for the partnership with the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois in conducting damage assessments. My administration continues to coordinate recovery efforts and will ensure we pursue all possible opportunities for additional assistance for residents who experienced devastating impacts from these storms.”
The Cook County Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security monitored the needs of communities during the storm and assisted with recovery efforts. EMRS continues to coordinate recovery efforts and provide technical assistance and support in conducting damage assessments at the municipal level.
Over 5,500 reports of damage to homes and businesses throughout Cook County from this event have been received. Additionally, local municipalities have indicated and are completing damage reports for publicly-owned infrastructure and response expenses. These reports demonstrate the significant impact of this storm on the region.
Southwest Side residents are urged to keep receipts and estimates for damages. Residents are also encouraged to report damage at 311 and at the aldermanic offices of Marty Quinn, Silvana Tabares, Ray Lopez and Jeylu Gutierrez.
