The Village of Monee will host the unveiling of the public statue honoring its namesake, Marie LeFevre-Bailly, at noon on September 7. The program will take place at 5511 W. Court Street in Monee.
It will include remarks from guest speakers, a presentation by the Monee Historical Society, and an opportunity to meet the sculptor, Sydney Ryan. The milestone honors our Monee’s rich history, the arts, and the enduring commitment to community growth and heritage preservation.
Monee Historical Society President Emeritus Christi Holston said research on “Who was Princess Monee” started in 2011, when the MHS was founded. The idea for a statue started when we were planning celebrations for Monee’s 150th Anniversary Celebrations in 2024.”
“In 2023, the village was looking for something permanent to commemorate the anniversary, and the Historical Society was completing our research on Marie LeFevre Bailey’s life and times and the impact of the Native Americans on our area. Between the two, the idea was born.
“We are all very gratified this project is coming to fruition, and the true history of this remarkable woman is known,” Holston added.
“Marie is a worthy namesake for the village, exemplifying strength, resilience, courage, and pride of family and community.
“Marie’s statue will be at the south/east corner of Court and Rt. 50, in the newly completed LeFevre/Bailly Park, across Court Street from the new Memorial Park.”
