Evergreen Park Village Trustee Mark Marzullo says the increase of youths, teens and adults riding through the village on electric bikes or scooters needs a closer look.
At Monday night’s meeting, the trustee said that many of these individuals are riding these electric or motorized bikes and going through stop signs and racing past pedestrians creating safety issues.
“Obviously, there are kids driving these things but there are also adults riding them and not paying attention to stop signs or traffic signals,” Mayor Kelly Burke said.
Burke was in agreement with Marzullo that perhaps an ordinance has to be introduced to enforce some traffic regulations regarding individuals riding these scooters.
In other business, the board approved an ordinance amending fees regarding the sale or purchase of alcohol. The municipal code also was amended to increase Class S liquor licenses by one.
Another ordinance was passed to approve a $10,000 loan agreement between the village and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. The agreement was reached to allow for lead service line replacements.
Burke said that they are currently awaiting documentation from Chicago for the water agreement. The lead service line replacements will begin later this year.
Burke welcomed the Rev. Tom Hurley on his appointment as the new pastor of Most Holy Redeemer Parish. The mayor said that Hurley has previously served at Most Holy Redeemer and at St. Patrick’s Parish.
She also congratulated the Evergreen Park Girls Softball League (14U) for capturing the Illinois Junior League State Championship. The Evergreen Park squad will be playing a team from Italy next week.
“Congratulations to our girls,” Burke said. “Maybe the team from Italy will have jet lag when they come here.”
Police Chief Michael Saunders asked to sell three vehicles to the Village of Dixmoor, who are in need of them. They are selling two 2020 Ford Explorer Utility vehicles for $6,000 each. The village is also selling a 2021 Explorer Utility for $7,000.
