A downed power line sparked a multi-vehicle fire Thursday afternoon in Summit, destroying several semi-trucks and heavy equipment and injuring two firefighters, officials said.
Fire crews responded around 12:20 p.m. to 5101 S. Lawndale Ave., where a semi-truck fire had spread to other vehicles and machinery, according to Summit Fire Chief Anthony Anderson.
“The downed power line also created a hazardous environment, temporarily delaying operations,” Anderson said. “ComEd responded promptly and successfully removed the power source, allowing crews to resume firefighting operations more safely.”
Firefighters from McCook, Lyons, Bedford Park, Forest View, Central Stickney and Pleasantview assisted with water supply and suppression efforts, Anderson said.
In total, four semi-trucks, multiple pieces of heavy machinery and a container unit filled with tires were destroyed. Two firefighters suffered heat exhaustion and were treated and released at the scene.
The Summit Fire Department thanked the assisting departments for their support.
