On June 7, the sun peeked out of the forecasted rainy-day weekend and decided to stay. The event of the day was the Ride4Life Cancer Fundraiser, an event put together by John and Nancy Kaufman. Their group consists of Mary and Tim Toppen, Pat Gorman, Lisa Woodall, Holly Rogers, and Mark Mesenbring.
Combining the thrill of riding with an inspiring mission, this fundraiser brought together riders, families, and supporters to raise funds and awareness for cancer research and patient care. For 24 years the Kaufman’s have been a part of the Relay for Life Cancer Fundraiser.

The sight of the group leaving with the Manteno Police Department escort was serene. The quiet wail of a fire siren was followed by police and 115 motorcycles. As they began their journey of more than 100 miles, a large group of spectators waved them off and cheered. This would be the beginning of a day filled with events – all for the benefit of cancer research. As the motto goes “We have never been more ready to put the American Cancer Society out of business!” Today would be proof.
The Manteno Sportsmen Club provided a welcoming space for riders and participants to gather, share stories, and contribute to the cause. The 100-mile ride wound down, and the participants ended up back at the Club, with spectators there to greet them. Dinner was served from 4 – 6 p.m., and the excitement of all the raffles began.
As Nancy stated, “We had lots of winners that day, including four different monetary winners and the fun raffle winner, as well. However, the true winners of the day were those who we are helping to fight the cause against cancer.”
The heart of the fundraiser is the motorcycle ride itself. Riders from diverse backgrounds and experiences come together to embark on a scenic journey, forging a sense of camaraderie, while spreading awareness. The ride often included stops at picturesque landmarks, local highlights, and memorial sites dedicated to cancer survivors and victims, creating a meaningful and memorable experience.
The Ride4Life fundraiser has a tangible and emotional impact. Funds raised support innovative cancer research, provide essentials for patients undergoing treatment, and contribute to programs that assist survivors in rebuilding their lives. The event also strengthens community ties, reminding attendees of the power of collective action and shared commitment. The event brought in a total of more than $1,000,000 throughout the course of the 24 years.
The Ride4Life cancer fundraiser was a shining example of how passion and purpose can come together to spark meaningful change. Whether you are a rider, a volunteer, or a supporter, your involvement contributes not only to the fight against cancer but also to the strengthening of community bonds.
United by the roar of engines and the heartbeat of hope, Ride4Life demonstrates that, together, they can ride toward a cure. The success of this year’s Ride4Life was amazing. The group would like to thank all who were involved in taking the time to make it so.
On the cusp of summer, John Kaufman added a final thought:” Watch out for motorcycles…and thank you all for your support. See ya next year.”
