According to MaxPreps, Crete-Monee senior Bren Milburn ranked No. 1 nationally among high-school players with 93 stolen bases this season.

It’s no secret in the south suburbs that Crete-Monee speedster Bren Milburn can steal bases in bunches.

Now the rest of the nation knows it, too.

Milburn stole 93 bases for the Warriors and according to stats submitted to MaxPreps, that’s the No. 1 theft total in the country.

It’s also tied for third in the history of the MaxPreps National High School Record Book. Silento Sayles of Port Gibson, Mississippi, is first with a 103 stolen-base season in 2013.

Joey Hood from Los Angeles was second on this year’s list with 73 — 20 behind Milburn.

Earlier in the season, he told the Vedette that he relishes stealing bases.

“That’s my favorite part, I have to say,” he said. “Getting the green light, having the option to put my team in the best position … just being able to not stay back for myself but for the team, being able to get into scoring position for them to rack up the RBIs for the guys behind me.”

Milburn had 134 plate appearances in 2025 and had a .439 average. He is committed to Morton College.

His 93 swipes for a season tops the IHSA record book as two players are now tied for second with 73 each.

He is also third on the IHSA’s all-time stolen-base list with 188 behind Waltonville’s Tim Dressler (210 from 1981-1984) and Woodlawn’s Rick Gaebe (194, also from 1981-1984).

Bobcats honored

It didn’t take long for Beecher School District 200U to honor the IHSA Class 2A state champion Bobcats softball team.

The team was recognized at the June 11 board meeting, four days after they won state.

“They are great champions,” Beecher coach Kevin Hayhurst told the board. “And they have great grade-point averages and that’s the most important thing. That’s what we’re here for. I’m really, really proud of them.”

Beecher state-qualifying track stars Brooklynn Burdick and Wences Baumgartner were also honored as was Beecher seventh grader Ben Jerkatis, who won the Illiinois Elementary School Association Class 3A discus title.

More awards for Bobcats

Beecher pitcher Ava Lorenzatti received the River Valley Conference Player of the Year honor.

Lorenzatti and Taylor Norkus were named first-team all-state by the Illinois Coaches Association. Makenzie Johnson was named to the second team and and Ava Olson to the third team. Hayhurst was named Coach of the Year.

Peotone’s Werner all-state

Peotone junior soccer star Allie Werner was named to the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association All-State team.

Werner had 36 goals and 20 assists in 20 games for the Blue Devils this year. She has 72 goals and 29 assists in her career.
