Shepard High School is now officially within Palos Heights city limits, ending its decades-long status in unincorporated Cook County and opening the door to city services—including local police protection.

The annexation became final May 20, when the Palos Heights City Council corrected a technical error in the original ordinance. The revised version includes all four parcel numbers tied to the campus.

“We had given the wrong PIN number,” Mayor Robert Straz said during the council meeting. The updated version includes all four necessary parcel numbers.

The city first approved the annexation April 15. Community High School District 218 followed with a 7-0 vote on May 15.

District officials are now working with the city to establish a school resource officer program starting in the 2025–26 school year.

“This is a significant milestone for our school community,” Principal Tim Baker said. “Becoming part of Palos Heights strengthens our identity within a vibrant and supportive municipality.”

Superintendent Josh Barron pointed to existing partnerships, including High 5 Heights—a student-run business staffed by participants in the district’s Adult Transition Program. Since opening in November at 12213 S. Harlem Ave., the store has drawn strong support from Palos Heights police and nearby businesses.

“This takes the community to a whole new level,” Barron said. “We are grateful to the City of Palos Heights, Mayor Straz, and local leaders for this connection.”

District 218 Board President Carol Kats said the move will benefit Shepard’s future. She noted the city’s police chief also expressed support during the May 20 meeting.
