New city officials were sworn in Thursday night in Palos Hills and they wasted no time approving the city’s 2025–26 budget, accepting a $607,511.92 road work bid, and signing off on compensation ordinances and surplus property sales.
Mayor Gerald Bennett said the city is on solid footing, pointing to more than $130 million in recent residential and commercial investment, along with continued growth in population.
He credited steady sales tax revenue, low property taxes, and strong grant support for helping the city stretch a lean budget.
“We’re doing more with less,” Bennett said.
The council approved a bid from D Construction for street resurfacing. One of five bids submitted—and passed a compensation ordinance for elected officials.
Surplus city property will also be sold following a unanimous vote.
Ald. Marty Kleefisch reported on behalf of the police department, noting 334 traffic citations in April, six thefts and no felony complaints. A one-day traffic detail on April 29 resulted in 41 citations.
City vehicle stickers valid through 2029 are now available at City Hall.
Residents must bring a copy of their current vehicle registration. Animal tags cost $5 with proof of rabies vaccination, and garage sale permits remain $2.
Before adjournment, Bennett returned to the theme of collaboration.
“The hours we put in can be tough,” he said. “But with the support of our families—and each other—we can keep making Palos Hills one of the greatest places to live in the southwest suburbs.”
The next scheduled city council meeting is set for May 15 at City Hall.
