McCook will spend $38,000 to replace its aging gas pump system after the board approved the purchase on April 7.

The upgrade, which includes a new card reader, was described as necessary by Public Works Director Steve Perrin.

“We just need a new fuel reading system,” Perrin said after the village board meeting.

“We have a lot of new vehicles. They don’t make the keys anymore, so we need a whole new system.”

For years, employees used physical keys to access the pump. Perrin said the switch to a card system will modernize fueling and solve problems caused when employees accidentally took keys home.

In other action:

The board approved a 4% water rate increase, effective June 1. Mayor Terrance Carr said Chicago raised its rate for Lake Michigan water, and the village is passing on the higher cost to residents.

IT Director John Butkovich submitted his resignation, effective Sept. 5.

Clerk Charles Sobus will attend his final board meeting May 5. The village will honor him that night at Crystal Sky Banquets, 7941 W. 47th St.

Ken Lyons, who ran unopposed in the April 1 election, will be sworn in that evening as the new village clerk.

Carr, who also ran unopposed, was also elected highway superintendent for Lyons Township. He will replace Countryside Mayor Sean McDermott, who did not seek re-election for the highway superintendent’s job.
