The Easter Bunny greeted families outside the Rhine VFW on April 6, but the real draw was the all-you-can-eat pancakes.

Rhine VFW Post 2729 and its Auxiliary hosted their annual Breakfast with the Easter Bunny fundraiser at 5858 S. Archer Ave. The event included a toy giveaway, raffle baskets and a steady flow of pancakes, sausage, coffee and sweets.

Auxiliary President Michael Maruszak said the breakfast is a team effort.

“This is a collaboration with the Post and the Auxiliary,” Maruszak said. “We work together on this, and it’s a great event with a nice turnout every year.”

The tradition goes back more than four decades, said Diane Pencak, a past Auxiliary president who helped coordinate the event.

“This breakfast has taken place for over 40 years,” she said. “It’s a good breakfast, and the kids like it, as each of them gets to pick a gift.”

Toys were donated by Toys for Tots. Several tables were stacked with prizes, and kids crowded around to choose one. Two bikes and several raffle baskets were also up for grabs.

Proceeds from the event support VFW Post 2729 throughout the year.

Post Commander Charlie Johnson worked the door, selling tickets and welcoming guests.

“We thank everyone for coming out and are very appreciative for their support,” Johnson said.
