The Palos Heights City Council honored Jerry McGovern at its Jan. 21 meeting as he retired after 14 years of service as alderman for the Fourth Ward. McGovern, who was first appointed by Mayor Robert Straz, reflected on his time in office and thanked his colleagues and constituents during the meeting.
“It’s been an honor,” McGovern said. “The teamwork and support here have made this a rewarding experience.”
Several council members shared their thoughts on McGovern’s contributions.
Ald. Michael McGrogan commended his approach to decision-making, saying, “He doesn’t just say ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Jerry always does his homework, and his input has been invaluable.”

Ald. Jack Clifford spoke about McGovern’s impact on the council. “Jerry’s knowledge and dedication have been a gift to this city,” Clifford said. “He made us better as a team, and we’re truly grateful for his years of service.”
During the meeting, McGovern was presented with a commemorative gift: a pipe fitting inscribed with his name and the city’s name. The fitting symbolized the public works projects McGovern had championed throughout his tenure.
McGovern’s background as a Vietnam veteran was also highlighted, including a past Veterans Day presentation where he was recognized with a photo of himself in uniform alongside his squad. His colleagues noted how his military service shaped his leadership style and commitment to public service.
Ald. Brent Lewandowski described the lessons he learned from McGovern. “He’s taught me so much—not just about being an alderman, but about how to approach challenges with thoughtfulness and integrity,” Lewandowski said.
Mayor Straz appointed Patrick Scully as McGovern’s replacement during the meeting. Scully was sworn in immediately following the council’s approval. He will fill the remainder of McGovern’s term, which runs until April 2027.
“I’m honored to serve this community and look forward to building on the work Alderman McGovern has done,” Scully said.
The meeting concluded with reflections on McGovern’s legacy and a standing ovation from his colleagues and attendees.
