Argo High School administrators, staff members and students were recognized by Summit police and fire officials for their assistance helping senior citizens displaced by a fire in September at the senior housing building across the street from the school.

Summit Police Chief Mel Ortiz and Summit Fire Chief Anthony Anderson attended the December school board meeting to recognize Supt. William Toulios, Principal Brandon Cotter, and several staff members and students for their aid in helping residents that live in the Summit Senior Housing building after the fire on Sept. 16..

“We would like to formally acknowledge and commend the actions of the students and staff from Argo Community High School during the recent Summit Senior Housing fire,” said Ortiz.

“Their quick thinking, bravery, and selflessness exemplify the highest ideals of community service.

“On September 16, 2024, these students and staff members demonstrated remarkable composure and compassion, aiding in the evacuation of residents and ensuring that everyone was cared for.  Their efforts not only helped to mitigate the impact of this tragic event but also provided comfort and support to those in distress.

“The students and staffs’ actions reflect the values of our school community: empathy, responsibility, and courage.  We are incredibly proud of them and believe their service deserves recognition.

“We encourage everyone to celebrate their commitment to helping others in times of need.  Their actions serve as an inspiring reminder of the positive impact one can have in the community.”

Receiving awards were Toulios, Cotter, Head Football Coach Phillip Rossberg, Argo Security Head Timothy Prince, Student Supervisors Judith Trigueros and Christian Diaz, and students Aiden Aguilar, Lucas Skoczylas, and John Marrotta Jr. 

Fifty senior citizens were displaced from their homes due to the fire. 

The fire broke out around 2 p.m. that day and Argo staff and students were at the scene helping residents. 

Fifteen to 25 elderly residents were taken to the cafeteria in the Summit high school before going to the homes of family members or being temporarily placed in a hotel by the Red Cross.

There were no injuries in the fire.
