Portillo’s, which was started by Argo High School graduate Dick Portillo in 1963, will open its third drive-thru and to-go location today in Orland Park.

The company will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 9, with village officials and members of the Orland Park Area Chamber of Commerce.

The new location at 20 Orland Square Drive is in the former location of a Denny’s that closed a few years ago. The new concept has no dining room but there is an indoor pickup area to go along with multiple drive-thru lanes.

Orders may be placed through portillos.com, the Portillo’s app or third-party delivery services.

This location will be the third Portillo’s Pick Up, joining locations in Joliet and Rosemont.

Portillo’s looks like a racetrack. This sleek, race-inspired layout features bold stripes, LED lights, and a drive-thru with race-themed decor inside the building.

This project was designed and rendered by Daliah Zarour, Portillo’s Restaurant Architectural Designer.

Portillo started the business as a hotdog stand in Villa Park in 1963. He soon expanded and eventually sold the business in 2014 to Berkshire Partners for $1 billion.

Bettenhausen donates mobility van

Tinley Park’s Bettenhausen Automotive made the holidays a bit brighter for the Hickey family by donating a mobility van to help the family’s daily transport 11-year-old Adin to Lurie Children’s Hospital.where he had been recovering from heart transplant surgery for more than a month.

Adin, who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, an incurable genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration, was stricken with a strep infection in September that attacked his weakened heart muscle, which meant he needed a transplant.

“Ever since he got his heart, he says, ‘OK, we got my heart, now can we go home,” explained

Melissa Hickey, Adin’s mom. The challenge for the single mother, who previously had moved the 140-pound Adin from the house to her car, was she could not afford the Mobility Van that was now required to transport her son.

“While cars are indeed our business at Bettenhausen Automotive, our commitment to

the people and the causes impacting the communities we serve will be our legacy,” said co-owner Mike Bettenhausen. “It is a privilege to be able to do something that could have such an immediate and lasting impact on a family. Seeing Adin and his mom get into that Mobility Van warmed the hearts of our entire Bettenhausen Automotive family.”
