Stickney Mayor Jeff Walik welcomes visitors before they head out on a hayride.

Stickney Mayor Jeff Walik and members of the village parks and recreation committee hosted the annual Halloween Pumpkin Patch on Oct. 19. About 1,000 people attended the festivities at 43rd and Ridgeland, marking an increase from years past, officials said.

The event featured a haunted hayride and a pumpkin patch exclusively for Stickney kids under 12 years old. The evening culminated in a cozy bonfire, a popular highlight for many on the chilly night.

“It just keeps getting bigger,” Trustee Lea Torres said. “This year, we had 1,000 people show up, with 785 enjoying the hayride and about 275 pumpkins handed out. During COVID, we did a drive-by to distribute pumpkins and candy, but there’s nothing quite like gathering together in person. This may have been one of our biggest events yet.”

The event received positive feedback for its organization and atmosphere.

“It was an excellent event,” Torres added. “People were genuinely scared, which is what we aimed for. The weather was perfect, and we couldn’t have asked for better help from everyone. It’s a wonderful event for our families and seniors.”
