Vanderbilt commit Jack Elliott, Mount Carmel cruise by Benet
Through the first five games of the season, Mount Carmel has piled up 215 points for an average of 43 points per game.
One of the primary reasons why the Caravan have been so successful thus far is the play of senior quarterback Jack Elliott.
In guiding Mount Carmel to a 48-13 Week 5 CCL/ESCC crossover victory over Benet in Chicago, Elliott ran for three touchdowns and passed for another.
The Vanderbilt commit has 11 rushing TDs on the season with 438 yards on 53 carries. Against Benet, the Vanderbilt commit accrued 87 yards on 10 carries.
The Caravan (4-1) opened the scoring at 9:46 of the first quarter as Elliott (10-of-22 passing, 133 yards) collaborated with Quentin Burrell (six receptions, 101 yards) on a 21-yard pass in the back left corner of the end zone off a flea-flicker.
On the season, Elliott is 69-of-120 passing for 1,225 yards and 10 TDs. Burrell has 23 catches for 500 yards and five scores.
Wide receiver Cooper Lehman widened Mount Carmel’s margin to 14-0 with a 5-yard run around the right side off a jet sweep with 3:48 remaining in the opening stanza.
After a 22-yard interception return by Jack Clevenger with 22 seconds to play in the first quarter drew the guests to within 14-7, Elliott scrambled down the left sideline for a 22-yard TD run, making it 21-7 with 7:03 to play in the second quarter.
Benet (4-1) battled back, cutting the deficit to 21-13 as Ryan Kubacki connected with Luke Wildes on a 6-yard toss at the 3:38 mark.
Elliott, however, was not done.
With 25 seconds remaining in the first half, he scored on an 8-yard run in which he started down the middle before veering to his right and into the end zone, making it 28-13 Caravan.
Benet had allowed just 58 points (14.5 ppg) through its first four games.
Elliott scored his final TD of the game with 8:50 to play in the third quarter as he scrambled to his left for a 22-yard touchdown on fourth-and-20, giving his team a 35-13 advantage.
Backup quarterback Emmett Dowling’s 5-yard run at 3:23 of the third quarter made it 41-13. Luca DeRosa’s 1-yard plunge 31 seconds into the fourth quarter was the final TD of the game.
