Remember to honor working men and women on Labor Day
And just like that – its September. Happy Labor Day to all. Thank you to our laborers as we honor the American Labor Movement this Monday, Sept. 2.
Some of the residents of the Beat 822 community put on their rubber gloves, grabbed a heavy-duty garbage bag, and cleaned up 55th Street near Central Park on Saturday, Aug. 17. Me, my husband, and our dog Oliver also joined the cleanup crew. It is always a nice event, where we get to socialize with folks in the area and help. The only issue is we need to clean up every day, we barely made a dent in the neighborhood after working for an hour before the rain soaked us all.
Special thanks to Officer Tracy, Officer Anderson, and Officer De La Torre, from the 8th District who helped in the cleanup event. The next CAPS meeting for Beat 822 will be at Peck School on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. I strongly suggest attending to receive the latest updates of what is happening crime wise in the neighborhood and to meet friends.
These days I absolutely hate driving and am sort of giving it up. When I walk to the market on 58th and Pulaski I take my trusty old push cart to help haul my groceries. When I walk for groceries, I go out of my way by an extra block so I can cross at the street light on 59th. Hopefully that intersection is safer with the light. But that can be scary as well, even during the day. Those turning right off 59th onto Pulaski very rarely give me the right of way, I always wait a few seconds to make sure I am seen. On this note, a meeting will be held at Curie High School at 6 p.m. on Sept. 17. The Southwest Collective will share the results of their Pulaski traffic safety survey along with recommendations on how to make the streets safer for everyone. There will also be representatives from the Active Transportation Alliance and the Chicago Department of Transportation. Elected officials have also been invited. There is a new lineup of Chicago Artopia Concerts at West Lawn Chicago Public library. Come and listen to the Kaia String Quartet on Sept. 21 starting at 7 p.m. You can register by visiting the library or the website at www.chipublib.org. More events are scheduled for November and December.
