By a 12-1 vote, the Kankakee City Council first voted to change the zoning of a parcel of land on the east side of Waldron Road, just north of Grace Christian Academy, from residential to commercial in preparation for next passing a conditional use permit for a solar farm on that site. The action, taken at the April 15 Kankakee City Council meeting, was not without some amendments, including one that will terminate the solar operation permit if the current land owner decides to sell the property.
In other action, the council approved a continuing resolution to maintain municipal spending at 2023-2024 levels until such time as a new budget for the current 2024-2025 fiscal year can be finalized. This action was required because the 2023-24 fiscal year for Kankakee City Government ends on April 30.
