Marrs-Meyer Legion Post to celebrate with outdoor concert

Summer is slipping away but Worth Mayor Mary Werner reminds residents that an outdoor concert will be a highlight this weekend.

The Outdoor Music Fest will be held from 6 to10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Marrs-Meyer American Legion Post 991, 11001 S. Depot St. Members of the post also remind everyone that the event is free and there is no cover charge.

The featured band will be Smoke and Mirrors. Food and refreshments are available for purchase. More information can be obtained by calling the post, 708-448-6699.

Werner mentioned during the Worth Village Board Tuesday night that the week of Sept. 17 through Sept. 23 will be designated as Constitution Week.

“It is the privilege and duty of the American people to commemorate Sept. 17 as the 236th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States,” said Werner about the proclamation.

The mayor signed the proclamation and reminded the board and residents of the importance of that week.

“I urge all citizens to study the Constitution and reflect on the privilege of being an American citizen with all the rights and responsibilities which that privilege involves.”

Village Clerk Bonnie Price said that a request that the Blue Cap charitable organization of Blue Island can conduct a tag day on Oct. 7. The village will allow Blue Cap to ask for donations at specified intersections.

Trustee Pete Kats, who is the head of the public safety committee, lauded the efforts of the police department that made 44 arrests in July.

He was mystified that 15 offenders were arrested for driving with a suspended or revoked license. Eight others were arrested for not having a driving license.

“Twenty-three people were pulled over for not having licenses,” Kats said. “That just astounds me. I just have to thank the police for all that they do.”

Trustee Brad Urban, who is the head of the public works committee, said there was some flooding last month and the department has cleaned those areas up. The village also dealt with five water main breaks that have been repaired, he said.

Street resurfacing began last month and all streets have been milled as of Aug. 4. Paving has been delayed due to recent rain but resumed last week, Urban added.

An ordinance was approved to authorize the disposal of personal property, which in this instance, was older police cars. The vehicles are scheduled to go to auction.

Another ordinance was approved with an agreement between the village and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District for the design, planning, construction, operation, and maintenance of a flood control project in the Worth Woods subdivision.

Stahlak Park improvements

The Worth Park District is applying for an Open Land Acquisition and Development grant through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for improvements to be made at Stahlak Park, 112th and Natchez Avenue.

A community meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at the Terrace Centre, 11500 S. Beloit Ave. Park district officials will provide residents with plans for the park and will ask for their input. More information can be obtained by calling 708-448-7080.

Trustee Rich Dziedzic reminded residents that the Metro Car Show will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, in the parking lot of the Water’s Edge Golf Course, 7205 W. 115th St. Registration begins at 9 a.m. that day.

Trustee Laura Packwood, who is the head of the golf committee, said that repairs are being made on bridges at the course. She added that the boxes at the driving range are continually moved to allow grass to remain healthy.

“The driving range has been super busy,” Packwood said. “It’s busy all day even when the lights go off at 10 p.m. There are people there right up until that time.”

She also added that food and beverage is always busy as well.

A business license was tentatively granted to Flyman Models, 11244 S. Harlem Ave. Business owner Aiman Musleh said they will have model planes and a variety of toys for sale.

Owner Stanley Tsiaousis said his business, Alexa’s Wash and Win, 6702 W. 111th St., will serve as a laundromat and have video gaming. A liquor license is required for video gaming. They will serve beer and wine at the business.

Trustees were initially concerned that package goods would be sold at the business. The owner said that is not the case. Tsiaousis said that liquor would only be allowed at the premises. The business was approved

Owner Salem Ahmed said his business, Tag, 10517 Southwest Highway, will be a banquet hall/restaurant. However, reservations are required and no walk-ins will be accepted. The business also received tentative approval.
