After approval by the Kankakee County Board at its June 13 meeting, engineering work will begin on the replacement of two bridges in Momence Township. Eventually, there will be new structures built on County Highways 13 and 14. The engineering contract for the projects was awarded to Hampton, Lenzini and Renwick, Inc., and the funds will come from the motor vehicle tax the county levies on gasoline purchases.
At the meeting, board members also received the details of an audit of county finances conducted by Smith, Koelling, Dykstra, and Ohm, P.C. The firm reported Kankakee County ended fiscal year 2022 with its highest general fund balance on record at $8.5 million. The audit also shows the county will be debt free by fiscal year 2024. The current financial picture will allow the county to rebate 100 percent of its portion of residents’ property taxes.
