Thomas Stack, 83, of Frankfort, passed away in March 2023. Born on Chicago’s Southside, he was the son of Edward and Margaret. Tom married Sharon Filipiak in 1987.
Tom was a Union 1 Iron Worker for more than 35 years. Working with American Bridge and Midwest Steel, he helped shape the Chicago Skyline, including the John Hancock, State of Illinois, Tishman, 1st National, CNA , and ATT buildings, plus McCormick place II and III. He also worked on Chicago landmarks. Formerly known as the Sears Tower, he had the honor of riding the final beam into place. He believed in honest hard work and quickly made a name for himself in his profession.
Tom served his country in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1965 and was awarded an Army Commendation Medal for Heroism in 1964. He had a deep love for the United States and proud admiration for all who served her and her people.
Tom loved his family, home, and property and could often be seen cutting his lawn or tinkering on his hot rod. He was a history buff and had a great respect for the American Indian and love of anything country/western. He talked about praying, as a young man, that someday they would have a family. He was so blessed.
Tom is survived by his wife, Sharon; children, John Stack (Diana Jura), Sarah Stack, Carly (Tony) Battista, and Sophie (Christian) Schabacker; grandchildren, Jackson, Daniel, and Brooklyn; and multiple nieces, nephews, brother, and sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Daniel Filipiak.
Tom will be laid to rest at 2:30 p.m., on May 8, at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. A memorial will follow. Memorials may be directed to the families wishes.
