College Notebook | Area grads Hynes, McCormick earn honors

University of Chicago women’s basketball player Grace Hynes has been named to the 2022-23 University Athletic Association’s First Team.

The Maroons senior guard, a Mother McAuley graduate, led Chicago to a 23-4 overall record through their first 27 games, and went 10-4 in the UAA, good enough for second place in the conference.

Hynes paced Chicago in points (435), points per game (16.1), rebounds (186), rebounds per game (6.9) and free-throw percentage (.838). She was second in assists (56), third in 3-pointers made (33) and fourth in steals (23).

Hynes tallied 25 points or better in seven games this season and grabbed double-digits rebounds in five games.

Hynes was named to the All-UAA Second Team in 2021-22. She was the UAA Athlete of the Week in women’s basketball on three occasions during the 2022-23 season.

A Matt of Mention

St. Laurence graduate Matt McCormick was chosen the Big East Player of the Week in baseball for the period ending Feb. 27.

McCormick, the starting first baseman at Xavier, batted .556 (10-for-18) as the Musketeers won three of four games. Of his 10 hits, McCormick delivered four home runs to finish the week with a slugging percentage of 1.222. He added six RBI and seven runs scored.

During a 12-8 loss at Louisville on Feb. 22, McCormick went 3-for-5 at the plate, including a pair of home runs, and drove in three runs.

Four days later, the senior compiled another two-home run game as he went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored as the Musketeers defeated Western Carolina 15-3.

In the second game of the doubleheader, McCormick was 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in a 16-12 triumph over the Catamounts.

McCormick has started all 13 games for Xavier, and is second in batting average (.347) and home runs (4). He has an OPS rate of 1.091 to go with eight runs scored, two doubles and six RBI.

Noticing Nadia

Lewis University’s Nadia Roberts was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week for Feb. 22.

The Reavis alum helped the Flyers finish third in a six-team field at the F. Lee Slick Invite held at North Central College. She took first in the high jump with an NCAA provisional mark of 1.67 meters (5 feet, 5.75 inches) on Feb. 17. A junior, this marked the first time for Roberts to be recognized by the GLVC.
