Our Lady of the Ridge, St. Linus to host Mass of Healing on November 23
Our Lady of the Ridge-St. Linus Parish will host a Mass of Healing for Those Suffering from Addiction at the St. Linus Church worship site on Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m.
The Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, also known as Blackout Wednesday, can be one of the biggest binge drinking nights of the year.
Father Ryan Brady, associate pastor of the parish, will preside over the Mass, which is in its second year. Fr. Brady is a recovering alcoholic, and he will share his personal journey of recovery during his homily.
Since 2020, the number of alcohol-related deaths has skyrocketed. According to a CDC study published by the JAMA Network in early November, findings suggest that in 2019-2020 an estimated one in eight deaths of adults, aged 20 to 64, was attributable to excessive alcohol consumption, including one in five deaths among adults aged 20 to 49.
The research also suggests that alcohol consumption and related harms increased nearly 30% in the United States during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Among adults, aged 20 to 64, the proportion of alcohol-attributable deaths to total deaths varied by state but nationally it’s a leading cause of preventable death, according to the CDC.
