GRCL President Richard Techman’s life to be celebrated

Richard J. Techman was a lifelong Garfield Ridge resident and longtime president of the Garfield Ridge Civic League.
He died suddenly and unexpectedly at home on Saturday, Oct. 15. He was 65 years old.

“As a news reporter, I had contact with Rick going back to the 1980s,” said Greater Southwest News-Herald Editor Tim Hadac. “One thing that will always stand out for me is his consistent, unwavering dedication to the community. More people in this community, and this world, need that sort of quality.”
In addition to the GRCL, Mr. Techman was a member of the Clearing Civic League, a board member of the Garfield Ridge Satellite Senior Center and a one-time board member of the Midway Chamber of Commerce.
He was described as “a good friend” by former GRCL President Henry Pukala, who added that Mr. Techman also had served as GRCL treasurer, recording secretary and corresponding secretary.
He studied print journalism in college. He earned an associate’s degree in the subject from Daley College and then a bachelor’s degree from Columbia College.
For years, he was employed by the Illinois Department of Employment Security, assisting people claiming unemployment insurance benefits.
Mr. Techman is survived by his wife, Michele (nee Glaser) and brother, Thomas. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jeanette.
A memorial visitation in celebration of Mr. Techman’s life and his accomplishments will be held at Foran Funeral Home, 7300 W. Archer, Summit, on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 11 a.m. until time of service at 11:45 a.m. Immediately after, there will be a procession from the funeral home to Resurrection Cemetery, where Mr. Techman’s remains will be laid to rest.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations of time to benefit a local organization, in the spirit of community improvement.
